PLACES OF WORSHIP IN AYMANAM GRAMAPANCHAYAT

Aymanam Grama Panchayat is an area where different religious communities coexist peacefully. Temples, churches and mosques are functioning in different parts of the panchayat. Apart from religious ceremonies, these also play an important role in social, cultural and charitable activities. The important places of worship are given below.

 

Aymanam Narasimha Swamy Temple

Details: Aymanam Narasimha Swamy Temple is one of the rare Narasimha temples in Kottayam that comes under the administration of the Travancore Devaswom Board. This ancient temple is located about 5 kilometers from Kottayam town, near the Aymanam Panchayat Office. The main deity here is Narasimha Murthy, the fourth incarnation of Mahavishnu, depicted in the form of Narasimha with a lion’s face and a human body. The temple also has the distinction of being the first temple in Kerala to hold its annual festival each year. The Arattu ceremony is conducted on the day of Thiruvonam in the Malayalam month of Chingam. Chathushatham and Panakam are the main offerings. It is believed that the deity is especially fond of an offering consisting of grated coconut placed over cooked dry-rice meal.

 

Sree Mahadeva Temple, Parippu

Details: Parippu Mahadeva Temple is a very ancient Shiva temple located in the Parippu area of Aymanam Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district. The temple is considered one of the famous 108 Shiva temples in Kerala. The main deity of the temple is Mahadeva, who faces east. Along with Mahadeva, the temple also houses subsidiary shrines dedicated to Sreekrishna, Shasta, Ganapathi, and Bhagavathi. The annual festival in the Malayalam month of Meenam, as well as Maha Shivaratri and Thiruvathira, are celebrated here with great devotion and elaborate rituals.

Details: Pandavam Sree Dharmasastha Temple is an ancient and renowned Sastha temple located in the Pandavam region of Aymanam Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district. According to legend, both the area and the temple derived the name "Pandavam" from the belief that the Pandavas of the Mahabharata stayed here during their period of exile in the forest. The principal deity of the temple is Sree Dharmasastha (Ayyappan). A rare form of Sastha is worshipped here, where the deity is consecrated on the same pedestal along with Poorna and Pushkala. There is also a local belief that the consecration was performed by Naranathu Bhranthan. Another well-known legend states that when the Thekkumkoor king was unable to undertake a pilgrimage to Sabarimala, Dharmasastha appeared to him in a dream and revealed His presence at this location, following which the king built the temple. A beautiful example of Kerala temple architecture, the temple is especially famous for its unique mural paintings. The temple walls depict numerous divine scenes, including Krishna Leela, Shiva Tandava, Ganapati Puja, Yoga Narasimha, Parvathi Parinayam, and Sastha seated on an elephant. The temple's major celebration is the eight-day annual festival held during the Malayalam month of Dhanu. The presence of subsidiary deities such as Ganapati, Shiva, Malikappurathamma, Mahavishnu, and Nagaraja further enhances the temple's spiritual significance. Vasudevapuram Sree Krishna Temple, Kudamaloor.

Details: The Vasudevapuram Sree Krishna Swamy Temple, located at Kudamaloor in Aymanam Grama Panchayat of Kottayam district, is one of the major Vaishnavite temples in the region. Lord Krishna is the principal deity of the temple. Devotees worship Lord Krishna here in the form of Jagannatha. The temple deity faces east. According to legend, this temple was built to provide a place of worship for the women of the Chempakassery Madam at Kudamaloor. The temple also has historical significance connected to the Chempakassery royal lineage. One of the temple’s main attractions is its mural paintings, which showcase the rich heritage of Kerala temple art. Rare examples of ancient painting have been preserved on the temple walls. The main offerings include Thulabharam, Para Nirakkal, Appam, and Palpayasam. The Ashtamirohini celebration in the Malayalam month of Chingam and the eight-day annual festival in the month of Kumbham are the temple’s major festivities.

 

 

Iraveeswaram Sri Mahadeva Temple

Rich in ancient heritage and spiritual significance, the temple is dedicated to Lord Mahadeva as its principal deity. With a history spanning centuries, this temple is an attraction for both devotees and history enthusiasts alike. One of the most remarkable features of Eeraveeswaram Mahadeva Temple is the remains of an ancient fort situated near the temple. Elevated earthen mounds and gaps in the walls can still be seen today as evidence that a fort and defensive structures once existed here. These historical remnants enhance the cultural importance of the temple. Shiva devotional festivals such as Maha Shivaratri and Thiruvathira are celebrated with special significance at the temple. On these occasions, numerous devotees arrive for worship and offerings. Karikulangara Devi Temple

Details: The Karikulangara Bhagavathi Temple, located in Kudamaloor of Aymanam Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district, is one of the major Goddess temples in the region. The main deity of the temple is Bhagavathi, worshipped in the form of Bhadrakali. The temple is believed to be one of the 108 Durga temples established by Parashurama. Rich in ancient traditions and legends, the temple is also thought to have a historical connection with the Chempakassery royal dynasty. It is believed that the sanctum sanctorum (Sreekovil) of the temple originally faced north and was later reoriented to face east. The continued presence of the Balikkallupura on the northern side is regarded as a reminder of this belief. Alinkal Bhagavathi, Yakshi, and Poora Bhagavathi (Kumaranalloor Amma) are the principal subsidiary deities of the temple. Devotees believe that on Vishu day, around midnight, the Karikulangara Devi departs for Madurai. At the same time, celebratory rituals are said to take place in villages around Madurai to welcome “Malayalathamma.” On Vishu day, after the Deeparadhana, the deity is ceremonially taken in procession accompanied by Thalappoli and installed in the “Ilamkovil” situated outside the temple walls. In front of this pavilion, local people gather, raising cheers and ritual ululations to bid farewell to the Goddess. Following this, the temple is closed. The temple is reopened later on the first day of the Malayalam month of Karkidakam, when the Goddess is believed to return. Combining spiritual beliefs, historical heritage, and the distinctive temple culture of Kerala, the Kudamaloor Karikulangara Bhagavathi Temple continues to stand as one of the principal centers of worship in Aymanam Grama Panchayat.

 

Thiruvatta Sree Rama Hanuman Temple

Details: The Thiruvatta Sree Rama Hanuman Swamy Temple, located in the Kudayampadi–Thiruvatta area near Aymanam Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district, is one of the major centers of worship for devotees. Lord Sree Rama and Hanuman Swamy are the principal deities of the temple. According to legend, during the Pandavas’ period of exile, Sage Dadhichi is believed to have consecrated the idol of Lord Sree Rama here at the instruction of Dharmaputra. Later, following a Devaprasnam (astrological temple inquiry), the presence of Hanuman Swamy was recognized, and Hanuman was consecrated as a subsidiary deity. Poonthrakkavu Devi Temple

Ilamkavu Devi Temple

Details: The Ilankavu Devi Temple, located in the Kummanam area of Aymanam Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district, is one of the prominent Bhagavathi temples in the region. The principal deity of the temple is Bhagavathi in the form of Bhadrakali. Worship here is based on the concept of the Goddess assuming a peaceful form after slaying the demon Darikasura. The deity is consecrated facing west. In ancient times, the temple administration was under the authority of the Karivelil Illam, but later it came under the supervision of the N.S.S. Karayogam. The temple’s main celebration is the eight-day annual festival held in the Malayalam month of Meenam. The festival concludes with the Aarattu ceremony conducted on the day of Meena Bharani. Blending spiritual beliefs, historical heritage, and local culture, the Kummanam Ilankavu Devi Temple continues to stand as one of the important centers of worship in the cultural heritage of Aymanam Grama Panchayat.

 

Vettakkorumakan Kavu Temple

Details: Vettakkorumakan Kavu Temple is an ancient Hindu place of worship located in the Olassa region of the Aymanam Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district. According to local legend, the temple was originally built by the Thekkumkoor Raja for Lord Krishna. It is believed that, under special circumstances, the idol of Vettakkorumakan was later consecrated here, and subsequently a separate sanctum was constructed for Lord Krishna. Vettakkorumakan is traditionally regarded as the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees worship Vettakkorumakan seeking courage, protection, and success in life. Both the Sri Krishna shrine and the Vettakkorumakan sanctum in the temple face east. However, the primary significance of the temple is given to the consecration of Vettakkorumakan. The annual festival at Olassa Vettakkorumakan Kavu concludes with the Aarattu ceremony held on the Uthram star day in the Malayalam month of Meenam. The Pooram Thullal conducted on the day before the Aarattu is the main attraction of the festival. Among the temple’s principal offerings, Vara Naivedyam holds special importance.

 

Poovankulangara Devi Temple

Details: Vettakkorumakan Kavu Temple is an ancient Hindu place of worship located in the Olassa region of Aymanam Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district. According to local legend, it is believed that this temple was originally built by the Thekkumkoor Raja for Lord Krishna. Later, under special circumstances, the idol of Vettakkorumakan was installed here, and subsequently a separate sanctum (Sreekovil) was constructed for Lord Krishna. Vettakkorumakan is regarded as the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Devotees worship Vettakkorumakan for courage, protection, and success in life. Both the Lord Krishna shrine and the Vettakkorumakan sanctum in the temple face east. However, the primary importance of the temple is given to the Vettakkorumakan deity. The annual festival of Olassa Vettakkorumakan Kavu concludes with the Arattu ceremony, which takes place on the Uthram star day in the Malayalam month of Meenam. The Pooram Thullal held on the day preceding the Arattu is the main attraction of the festival. Among the major offerings made at the temple, Varanivedyam holds special significance.

 

Cheruvallikkavu Devi Temple

Details: Cheruvallikkavu Devi Temple is one of the renowned Bhadrakali temples in Olassa village of Kottayam district. The temple is known as a major center of the village’s spiritual heritage and tradition of faith. The principal deity of the temple is Sri Bhadrakali Devi. Worship here is conducted in the concept of the Goddess facing west. According to local legends, the temple was under the control of the Edathil Thampurans in ancient times, and they are believed to have been associated with the Thekkumkoor royal family. The temple is a place of worship closely connected with the region’s history and cultural traditions. Holding an important place in the spiritual life of Olassa, the temple continues to stand as a center of faith for devotees who come seeking the blessings of the Goddess.

 

Kudamaloor St. Mary's Forane Church

Details: St. Mary's Forane Church is one of the oldest Syriac Catholic churches in Kerala, located in Kudamaloor in Kottayam district. Dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, this church is known as a major pilgrimage center for believers and a historically significant place of worship. According to tradition, the church was established around A.D. 1125–1126 with the support of the Chembakassery king. One of the unique features of this church is that it was founded under the leadership of a non-Christian ruler. Later, with the growth of the faithful community, a new and larger church was constructed. Kudamaloor Church is also famous as the home parish of St. Alphonsa, the first saint of India. The holy baptismal font in which St. Alphonsa was baptized is still preserved here. Therefore, pilgrims from various parts of the country visit this church. Holy Week observances, votive offerings, and special customs such as the “Swimming Offering” (Neenthu Nercha), “Porridge Offering” (Kanji Nercha), and “Curry Offering” (Kari Nercha) are distinctive features of the church. Every year, the feast of St. Alphonsa is devoutly celebrated on July 28. In addition, the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8 is conducted with great devotion and spiritual fervor.

 

Kallunkathara St. George Jacobite Syrian Church

St. John's Jacobite Church

Details: Olasha St. John's Jacobite Syrian Church is an important Jacobite Syrian Christian place of worship located in the Olasha area of the Aymanam Grama Panchayat. Situated approximately 9 kilometers west of Kottayam town, this church has played a significant role in the spiritual life of the local faithful. The church was established as a result of the desire of believers from the Olasha and Parippu regions, who had previously worshipped at Kallunkathara St. George Jacobite Church, to have a church in their own locality. Historical records indicate that the first Holy Qurbana was offered in the Malayalam calendar year 1097 during the month of Karkkadakam. The feast of the church's patron saint, St. John the Baptist, is the principal celebration of the parish. During the feast days, special prayers, processions, offerings, and spiritual gatherings are organized. These celebrations also help strengthen social and cultural unity within the region.

 

St. Anthony's Knanaya Catholic Church

Details: St. Anthony's Knanaya Catholic Church is one of the main spiritual centers of the Knanaya Catholic faithful in Olassa and the Parippu region. On December 8, 1912, the foundation stone of the church was laid by Fr. Mathai Vattakkulathil, who was then the parish priest of Idakkad Church. Subsequently, the first Holy Mass was celebrated on December 25, 1912, in a temporary thatched church. The construction of the church was completed through the collective efforts of the faithful. On June 13, 1920, the feast day of St. Anthony, the church was officially blessed and dedicated. Educational and social activities also developed alongside the church. A branch house of the Visitation Sisters congregation functions here. In addition, a nursery school, a tailoring training center, and St. Anthony's L.P. School contribute to the educational progress of the region.

 

 

CSI St. Mark's Church, Olassa

Details: One of the historically significant Christian places of worship in Kottayam district's Olassa village is CSI St. Mark’s Church, Olassa. Records indicate that this church, which comes under the Central Kerala Diocese, was established in 1840. The founder of the congregation was the English missionary Rev. Henry Baker Sr. A pastorate was formed in 1844. Situated amidst the scenic natural beauty atop Olassa hill, this church was one of the important centers of the early growth of the CSI Church. Closely connected with the history of the Anglican Church in Kerala, it has served for centuries as a center of faith and social service. The church is noted for its traditional Kerala-colonial architectural style and fine woodwork. Preserved while retaining its historic charm, it remains an attraction for both devotees and history enthusiasts alike. Reflecting the heritage and faith tradition of the CSI Church in Kerala, Olassa St. Mark’s Church continues to stand today as an important center of spirituality and social harmony.

Details: Rahmaniya Juma Masjid is one of the main Muslim places of worship in the Vattakkott–Kudamaloor area near Aymanam Grama Panchayat in Kottayam district. Located in the Kudamaloor region, this mosque has been serving as a center for the religious and social activities of the local community. The mosque conducts five daily prayers, Friday Jumu'ah prayers, special prayers during the month of Ramadan, religious education classes, and various social and cultural programs. The institution plays an important role in promoting the unity and spiritual growth of the local Muslim community. The mosque stands as part of the tradition of religious harmony in the Aymanam–Kudamaloor region. Maintaining friendly relations with various religious institutions in nearby areas, the mosque also participates in social service activities.
