Geography Details of Panchayat
Aymanam Grama Panchayat is a village panchayat in the Ettumanoor Block of Kottayam Taluk, Kottayam District, comprising the villages of Aymanam and Perumbaikad (partially). The panchayat covers an area of 30.03 square kilometers. Its boundaries are Kudamurur River and Pennarthodu to the north, Kottayam Municipality to the east, Enadi Thodu, Chunkam River, and Elangavu Thodu to the south, and Vembanad Lake to the west.
Aymanam is a water-rich and agriculturally prosperous village, featuring the vast Vembanad Lake, 4,000 acres of lush paddy fields spread across 36 paddy cultivation tracts, six major rivers flowing into Vembanad Lake as distributaries of the Meenachil River, and 64 smaller streams. The lake, streams, rivers, and paddy fields together create a landscape of remarkable natural beauty. The village is also a center of artistic and cultural heritage.
It is the heritage village associated with literary and cultural figures such as Arundhati Roy, playwright N. N. Pillai, Kathakali masters Kudamaloor Karunakaran Nair and Mathoor Govindan Kutty Asan, and Professor Aymanam Krishna Kaimal, all of whom contributed to its rich legacy of literature, art, and culture.
The village is also home to important spiritual pilgrimage centers, including Kudamaloor Church, a pilgrimage site associated with the memory of Saint Alphonsa; the Pandavam Temple, renowned for its centuries-old mural paintings; and the Aymanam Narasimha Swamy Temple, which marks the beginning of the temple festival season in Central Travancore.
